News for 26 January 2005
Randie continues to throw up some of her feeds. Fortunately we have a visit scheduled to Dr. Harding, our family doctor tomorrow, so hopefully he can give us some advice.

News for 23 January 2005
Randie seems a little better today, and we are managing to feed her smaller amounts of formula every 2 hours rather than larger amounts every 3 to 4 hours.

News for 22 January 2005
Today was sadly not a good day. Randie has been throwing up quite a lot, she seems lethargic and is not taking as much formula at each feed as she should. We called the NICU for advice (since there is a snowstorm outside and a trip to the hospital is out of the question), and they advised us to keep an eye on Randie and keep trying with the feeds.

News for 21 January 2005
Randie's first visit to her peadiatrician Dr. Cheung was today. Although Randie has gained weight (about 18g per day) since leaving hospital, this is not quite the 20 to 22g per day that the doctor would like to see.

News for 19 January 2005
We took Randie for her hearing test today and she passed with flying colours!

News for 18 January 2005
Since she has been home, Randie has not been feeding as well as we would hope. She has had quite a few instances of throwing up her feeds. Certainly this is something we will need to watch. On a more positive note however, Randie went for her eye exam today, and the doctor told us that Randie's eyes are developing well.

News for 14 January 2005
Randie was discharged from St. Joseph's today, and we now have her home with us!!

News for 11 January 2005
Fantastic news! We learned today that because Randie is doing so well, we will be able to bring her home on Friday 14th - in two days!

News for 5 January 2005
Randie is doing well. She is still receiving nutrition via her cut-line, but has only 1 day left on her antibiotics. She is up to 15cc of formula now and the swelling in her leg has gone down quite a bit. Randie is still quite pale as her red blood cell count is low due to blood being taken for testing several times over the last few days. It will take a few days more for her bone marrow to generate red blood cells to increase the count.

News for 4 January 2005
Randie has been moved back from isolation and into the main NICU. The infection is gone thank goodness, although the course of antibiotics will of course have to be completed. Randie's latest IV site unfortunately collapsed and fluid leaked under the skin into her leg and foot, so it will take a few days for the swelling from this to go down. What this will mean is that a cut-line will have to be inserted into Randie's other leg near the hip to continue antibiotic and nutrition. Randie has been started on 6cc of formula, and this will increase by 3cc every 9 hours.

News for 3 January 2005
An x-ray shows that Randie's bowels have improved significantly and that in a couple of days she will be able to start feeding again in small amounts and with gradual increases.

News for 31 December 2004
Although Randie is still quite sick, her treatment and recovery is going well.

News for 29 December 2004
Randie is quite sick, but is responding to the antibiotics. She is back in an incubator to help maintain her temperature while her infection is treated, and she has been isolated in a room of her own to help prevent the spread of infection.

News for 28 December 2004
Unfortunately Randie is sick once again with Necrotising Enterocolitis. This infection and inflamation of the bowel can be very dangerous, so Randie has had her bottle feeding stopped, and has been placed on IV feeds and antibiotics.

News for 20 December 2004
Randie is now up to 30cc+ of formula every 3 hours, and has just started bottle feeding - clever girl!

News for 11 December 2004
Randie has been doing extremely well over the past few days. So well in fact that at 1pm today she was moved from the L3 NICU at McMaster Medical Center to the L2 step down nursery at St. Joseph's Hospital. This new nursery will be her new home until she actually gets to go home with us!

News for 6 December 2004
Only part way into the 10 day post-infection monitoring period, Randie is doing so well that her doctors have decided to start feeding early. Randie is currently being fed 1cc of formula every 6 hours.

News for 3 December 2004
Randie's weight is now up to 1,358g, which is almost 3lb.

News for 2 December 2004
The plan was to remove the ventilator tomorrow as Randie's breathing is pretty much back to normal, and her morphine dosage has been taken away. However, Randie decided for herself that she no longer needed the ventilator and removed the tube herself! She really is daddy's clever little girl!

News for 1 December 2004
Much improvement today. The swelling is reduced and the redness has almost disappeared. Things are looking good that the infection has been dealt with. Randie will now be closely monitored for the next 10 days before feeding by mouth can begin again.
